After studying law and journalism, Jean-Xavier de Lestrade turned to making documentaries and reports for tv which scrutinize the mechanisms of society. He won an Oscar for Un coupable idéal. He is also known for the US documentary series The Staircase about the Michael Peterson case. He wrote and directed several awarded drama series such as 3 x Manon, Jeux d'influence and Laëtitia which was presented at the Sundance Festival. He is also the SACD (French society of authors)'s chairman.
