Tony McNamara is the creator, showrunner and producer of The Great, a 10-episode series starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, based on his play, and which received rave reviews when it launched on Hulu on May 15, 2020. McNamara wrote the critically acclaimed film The Favourite, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. He also won the British Independent Film Award for Best Screenplay, a BAFTA Cinema Award for Best Original Screenplay and Writer of the Year at the London Film Critics' Awards. The film stars Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, Nicolas Hoult and Olivia Colman, and was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos. In addition, McNamara wrote the final version of the upcoming Cruella film with Emma Stone for Disney. His filmography also includes Rage on Placid Lake, which McNamara wrote and directed. The film stars Rose Byrne, Miranda Richardson and Ben Lee, and won the Audience Award at the Melbourne International Film Festival, an AFI for Best Screenplay and two AWGIE Awards. McNamara's first American feature, Ashby, starring Mickey Rourke, Sarah Silverman, Emma Roberts and Nat Wolff, was produced by Paramount. McNamara has directed some of Australia's most acclaimed series, including the AFI Award-nominated The Secret Life of Us Love My Way Doctor Doctor and Spirited. He was also showrunner of the popular series Puberty Blues, which won the AFI for Best Series.
