Life in the isolated southern Italian town of Santocielo is changed forever when a nun suddenly begins speaking an unknown language and performing miraculous cures. As the cult of the Annunziata grows, the community's elite - the hunchbacked bearers of the statue of the local patron saint, Saint Sebastian - launch a witch-hunt to crush the subversive sect. But as fault lines are drawn within families and groups of friends, the conflict escalates into all-out war.
